La Selección Colombia Masculina se alzó con la victoria ante Uzbekistán este miércoles 17 de junio.
El combinado nacional mostró carácter, intensidad y efectividad para quedarse con el triunfo gracias a las anotaciones de Daniel Muñoz, Luis Díaz y Jaminton Campaz, quienes fueron los protagonistas en el marcador para el equipo dirigido por el profesor Néstor Lorenzo.
Posterior al encuentro, el director técnico de la Selección Colombia ofreció la conferencia de prensa habitual a los medios de comunicación presentes en el estadio Azteca de la Ciudad de México:

Pregunta 1: sobre el rendimiento del partido
“Creo que nos hundimos un poco en el segundo tiempo, a partir del minuto 10 más o menos. Y ellos tienen un juego muy directo que te obliga, te meten gente en el área y te obligan a estar ahí, a bajar. No es que progresen tocando.
Entonces, la pelota era para afuera, centro, y rebote. Y se repetía, afuera y centro, y eso te pone incómodo. Pero, es un equipo que trabaja muy bien eso, muy físico, y creo que tuvimos que refrescar porque se nos venían encima. Sin embargo, pensábamos que de pronto en el primer tiempo podríamos haber sacado una diferencia mayor también”.
Pregunta 2: acerca del cambio en el posicionamiento del equipo
“La idea era seguir con la línea de cuatro y poner dos volantes carrileros por fuera, a Gómez y a Campaz. Pero, de pronto se hundieron demasiado.
En el principio se hundieron demasiado y le dieron la posibilidad a ellos de llevarnos a jugar en bloque bajo. Y bueno, era lo que no queríamos porque entre esos centros y rebotes podía llegar alguna ocasión…que fue como llegó”.
Pregunta 3: acompañamiento de los hinchas colombianos
“No, la verdad que es una energía hermosa. Aunque emocionalmente creo que le pesó a algunos muchachos. Considero que de los que más corren, de los que mejor están físicamente, hoy sufrieron el partido desde ese punto de vista. Y tiene que ver un poco con la carga emocional que genera el primer partido y el marco en el que jugamos, además, con la obligación de ser el protagonista y de ganar, porque todos nos daban como favoritos, lo cual a nadie le gusta, aunque ese rol lo tuvimos que asumir.
Creo que salimos al primer tiempo, hicimos un muy buen primer tiempo. Nos faltó de pronto definir alguna jugada más con remates o con centros más peligrosos. Pero bueno, tuvimos un bache en el segundo tiempo donde hubo que refrescar y bueno, al final lo terminamos definiendo bien”.
Pregunta 4: relativo a las razones de los cambios realizados por el DT
“No, creo que es una buena lectura. Pero ayer lo dijimos, que los 26 estaban a un muy buen nivel…Es más, el cambio podía ser otro también que hubiera entrado también de la misma manera.
Elegimos por características jugadores de banda para tapar un poquito la doble presencia de bandas que tienen ellos. Con carrilero y extremo. Pero bueno, en un momento, como dije, nos metimos muy atrás, nos hundimos mucho y ahí había que salir. Había que salir a jugar en campo de ellos como hicimos en el primer tiempo”.
Pregunta 5: sobre la características en el juego de Colombia
“Una muy buena pregunta. La característica del equipo es ser protagonista, jugar en campo contrario, con los laterales subidos, con el protagonismo del balón. Lo que pasa es que el bloque defensivo de ellos se defendió muy bien.
Nosotros de pronto no estuvimos finos en la terminación. Y de pronto después nos costó. Nos empezaron a jugar con transiciones, con juego directo, nos hicieron correr para atrásy eso nos costó desde lo físico.
Pero, me quedo con la Colombia que juega en campo rival y que es protagonista con el balón. Por eso ponemos a veces a dos números diez. A un James y a un Jhon Arias….O si no, entra Juanfer, o está Carrascal, o está Campaz, que son jugadores de muy buen pie”.
Pregunta 6: la próxima fecha ante Congo y la última frente a Portugal
“Vamos a enfrentar a un equipo muy fuerte, que hoy lo vimos, que ha hecho un gran partido contra uno de los mejores equipos del mundo. Le ha jugado de igual a igual. Así que creemos que tenemos dos partidos muy, muy importantes y muy fuertes por delante.
De pronto con otras características. Entonces la estrategia de pronto será otra. Portugal tiene un estilo parecido al nuestro, de ser protagonista a partir del balón. Y el Congo de pronto juega más a transiciones, a pelotazos largos por banda, con velocidad, con salidas rápidas.
Son dos estilos diferentes, ¿no? Pero creo que van a ser dos partidos muy, muy difíciles para nosotros, que vamos a tener que afrontarlo con todo”.
Pregunta 7: las razones del gol de Uzbekistán y aspectos a corregir
“Sabíamos que por banda iba a ser difícil porque ellos paraban dos jugadores, un extremo y dos carrileros y entonces teníamos que encontrar el juego interior con Puerta, con Yonarias. Creo que lo hicieron muy bien.
Creo que combinamos. Algunas de ellas, por un poquito, no terminaron en jugada de gol. Había que tener paciencia. Creo que, como te digo, después cuando nos empezaron a jugar largo y nos hacían retroceder, lo sentimos un poco físicamente y ahí, bueno, por eso hicimos los cambios”.
Pregunta 8: acerca de la efectividad del equipo colombiano
“Se trabaja, se trabaja continuamente. Sobre todo veníamos a jugar a la altura y dijimos de rematar mucho al arco, de tirar centros de manera ‘venenosa’, como le decimos nosotros. Y, bueno, de pronto el exceso de posesión o el miedo a perder la pelota, insistimos con la posesión y volvíamos para atrás y llegamos a posiciones y volvíamos para atrás.
Toque corto, nadie terminaba la jugada. Creo que nos faltó un poquito eso. Como te digo, en un sistema 5-4-1 como jugaron ellos, nos cerraron bien los espacios y James lo mejor que tiene son esos pases filtrados entre líneas.
Pero, bueno, creo que no hizo un mal partido de todas maneras. No fue el mejor porque no fue de pronto el protagonista que es siempre en los goles o en las jugadas de gol, pero no hizo un mal partido. Hasta que estuvo bien hasta los 60, 65 minutos, creo que el partido fue aceptable.
En la posesión nos dio mucho porque él se baja y pide la pelota, que es lo que necesitamos en algunos momentos del partido”.

Question 1: On the team’s performance in the match
«I think we dropped a little too deep in the second half, starting around the 10th minute. They have a very direct style of play that forces you back. They put a lot of players in the box and make you defend deep. It’s not a team that progresses through short passing sequences.
The ball would go wide, then a cross, then a second ball. The same pattern kept repeating: wide, cross, second ball. That makes things uncomfortable. But they are a team that executes that approach very well. They are very physical, and I think we needed to refresh the team because they were putting us under pressure. Even so, we felt that in the first half we could have built a bigger lead.»
Question 2: On the change in the team’s positioning
«The idea was to continue with a back four and use two wide midfielders, Gómez and Campaz. But they ended up dropping too deep.
At the beginning, they dropped too deep and gave the opposition the chance to force us into a low block. That was exactly what we wanted to avoid because, with all those crosses and second balls, they could create scoring opportunities—which is ultimately how their goal came.»
Question 3: On the support from Colombian fans
«Honestly, it was an incredible source of energy. However, I think the emotional aspect affected some of the players. Some of the players who usually run the most and are physically strongest struggled from that perspective today.
I believe it had a lot to do with the emotional burden of the opening match and the atmosphere in which we played, along with the expectation that we had to be the protagonists and secure the victory because everyone considered us the favorites. That’s not a role anyone particularly enjoys, but it was one we had to embrace.
I think we had a very good first half. Perhaps we were missing one more finish, a few more shots, or more dangerous crosses. Then we went through a difficult spell in the second half, which required some fresh legs, but in the end we managed to finish the game well.»
Question 4: On the reasons behind the substitutions
«I think that’s a fair assessment. As we said yesterday, all 26 players are at a very high level. In fact, we could have made different substitutions and the players coming in would have responded in the same way.
We chose wide players because of their characteristics, aiming to neutralize the double threat they had on the flanks with both wing-backs and wingers. However, as I mentioned, at one point we dropped too deep and got pinned back. We needed to move up the field again and play in their half, just as we had done in the first half.»
Question 5: On Colombia’s playing identity
«That’s a very good question. The identity of this team is to be proactive, to play in the opposition’s half, to push the full-backs forward, and to dominate possession. The reality is that their defensive block was very well organized.
Perhaps we lacked precision in the final third. Then they started to hurt us with transitions and direct play, forcing us to run back toward our own goal, and physically that became demanding.
Still, I prefer the Colombia that plays in the opponent’s half and takes the initiative with the ball. That’s why we sometimes play with two number tens. We can have James and Jhon Arias together, or Juanfer can come in, or Carrascal, or Campaz. They are all players with outstanding technical quality.»
Question 6: On the upcoming matches against DR Congo and Portugal
«We are going to face a very strong team. We saw today that they played an excellent match against one of the best teams in the world and competed on equal terms.
We know we have two very important and very demanding matches ahead of us.
They have different characteristics, so our approach may need to change. Portugal has a style similar to ours, based on controlling the game through possession and being proactive. DR Congo, on the other hand, tends to play more through transitions, long balls into wide areas, pace, and quick attacks.
They are two very different styles, but I believe both matches will be extremely difficult, and we will have to approach them with full commitment.»
Question 7: On Uzbekistan’s goal and areas for improvement
«We knew it would be difficult down the flanks because they positioned two players there—a winger and a wing-back—so we had to find solutions through the middle with Puerta and Jhon Arias. I think they did that very well.
We combined effectively, and some of those moves came very close to becoming scoring chances. We needed to remain patient.
As I mentioned before, once they started playing long balls and forcing us to retreat, we felt the physical demands of the match, which is one of the reasons we made the substitutions.»
Question 8: On the team’s finishing and efficiency
«It’s something we work on continuously. We knew we were coming to play at altitude, so we talked about shooting more often and delivering dangerous crosses into the box.
At times, though, our desire to maintain possession—or perhaps the fear of losing the ball—led us to recycle possession too much. We would reach advanced positions and then play backwards again.
We relied on short passing combinations, but no one was finishing the move. I think that was something we lacked.
Against a 5-4-1 system like the one they used, spaces were very limited. James’ greatest strength is his ability to play penetrating passes between the lines.
Even so, I don’t think he had a bad game. It may not have been his best performance because he wasn’t as decisive as he usually is in goals or goal-scoring situations, but he still had a solid match. Up until around the 60th or 65th minute, I thought his performance was quite good.
He contributed a great deal in possession because he drops deeper to receive the ball, and that is exactly what we need at certain moments of the game.»
